Since his childhood, he has managed to impress the Gopis and quickly became famous among the villagers. Because of his doughtiness, he soon became revered among his devotees. Later, he played an important role in the victory of the Pandavas, the five legendary brothers, in the epic battle of Kurukshetra, which was later known as the Mahabharata. As it is said, it is the deeds of the person that raise them up to God’s life stature. The same was followed by Krishna, and due to his works, people started worshipping him.

With over 6,000 temples devoted to Lord Krishna, the preparation and celebration of Krishna Janmashtami start a month before the main event. All the temples are decorated like never before to relish the moment of birth of their Lord. Apart from regular ceremonies, there are two main events without which the festival isn’t considered complete.

These are Jhulanotsav and Ghatas. Jhulanotsav is customary, in which people put the wooden hammock outside their house and decorate the place with colourful rangoli, symbolising the welcome of little Krishna into their houses. The Ghatas is yet another unique ritual of the event where all the temples of Mathura and Vrindavan get beautiful decorations on the pre-decided theme and colour, including the clothes of the idol. In the main event, artists from various states and cities perform their arts, which basically include Raas-Leela and tableaux. These acts include the performances of children and adults, both sharing equal excitement.

The official birthplace of Lord Krishna is the Krishna Janam Bhoomi, which is now a major tourist destination in Mathura. And it is the place where the main event takes place, and it has witnessed no less than one and a half lakh devotees struggling to make their way into the endless crowd. To avoid stampedes or other mishaps, the district administration has to make special arrangements throughout the event.
